R&D strategy
During 2005, taking the independent innovation as the principal line and the service innovation as the center, the R&D system assisted the corporation to conduct all-round innovations, and through the two-wheel (business and technology) driving, promoted China Telecom to be a new innovative telecom enterprise.
R&D responsibility
The R&D activities include to: follow up technological development trend, draw up service and network development plans and technical policies; conduct original creation on corporate technical systems and standards; undertake laboratory testing and experimental networking verification on new technologies, new equipment and new services and be responsible for test and evaluation on new technology and equipment; organize development of new services, new products and various supporting systems; turn out services and products with independent intellectual property to serve
the whole corporation; establish operation and maintenance supporting systems and be responsible for the technical support for the backbone equipment in China Telecom's networks; provide information services and supports; publish various publications and manages various information databases.
R&D capabilities
So far, China Telecom has three R&D institutions which are Beijing Research Institute, Guangzhou Research Institute and Shanghai Research Institute and under them a number of technologically first-class laboratories and technology centers have been set up. With many years of continuous investment, they have become networked and fully specialized units with state-of-the-art facilities. The following are the important ones: Fiber Optic Transport Network Laboratory, Network Access Laboratory, Network Switching Laboratory, Data and Multimedia Laboratory, Cybersecurity Laboratory and Wireless Communications Laboratory. Additionally, the Software Evaluation and Test Supporting Center and some supporting centers for operation and maintenance of various specialized networks have been set up.
R&D focuses
For the time being, the R&D team is actively carrying out the following R&D work that are of important strategic nature: network intelligence, soft switching, 3G mobile communications, broadband access, intelligent optic network, video conferencing system, next Internet network and broadband television. It is also strengthening development of various new services and value-added services and entirely supporting China Telecom's strategic transformation from a traditional basic telecom network operator to a modernized integrated information provider.
